The worst environmental catastrophe in our nation’s history is unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico, making two things more clear than ever to Californians: we must transition away from oil and develop cleaner forms of energy, and we must elect leaders here at home who will work to make this transition possible.

Today, Senate candidate Carly Fiorina released an irresponsible T.V. ad critical of Senator Barbara Boxer’s statement that climate change is a national security issue. Fiorina referred to climate change as “the weather.” See the ad on YouTube here.

Campaign season expands the chorus of voices shouting to anyone who’ll listen that America is over-regulated, that regulations hurt business, that regulations kill jobs. Not that the chorus only sings this song during election years. Corporations spend billions of dollars trying to persuade the California Legislature and the Congress that regulations are the apogee of evil. Corporations spend millions in California on candidates that will sing the same song. They spend millions more on initiatives to relieve the burden on their profits.

I've certainly been there. You stare at your ballot. You see some names you're relatively familiar with. You sweat a little. Who to choose? Who. To. Choose? If you're lucky, you're deciding between two great candidates. If you're not, well... let's just hope you are. In trying to decide who to vote for, you check your trusted references (i.e. CLCV -- thanks by the way). But something doesn’t quite add up. The endorsements don’t quite match what you had heard elsewhere from other sources.

What gives?

During the campaign season, the amount of political mail you receive is probably somewhere between "excessive" and "stunning." That's just the nature of campaigns; despite its drawbacks, mail is frequently one of the most effective ways to get a message directly to voters.

Last night in San Francisco, the Julia Morgan Ballroom at the Merchants Exchange Building was the site of an incredible celebration: the California League of Conservation Voters’ 28th annual Environmental Leadership Awards. More than 300 environmental champions from the business, political, advocacy and nonprofit communities gathered together under the theme of “Building a Greener California” to honor some of California’s inspiring “green” leaders: Applied Materials, Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) and Justice William A. Newsom.
