It’s nothing less than a revolution in California: More and more, residents are greening their energy sources, turning to solar and other renewable energy sources. Houses and small businesses in my neighborhood are increasingly equipped with shiny high-tech solar panels. It’s the present, the future, and it’s fantastic. However, most residents of low-income communities and communities of color are renters, making it a challenge for those families to fully benefit from the cost-savings and carbon reduction of on-site renewable energy.

I was in bad shape.

A few weeks back, I started having trouble breathing. Just allergies, I told myself. But as the days went on I started coughing, and I couldn’t stop. I was up all night coughing, and the next day was even worse. And the next day.

“Mommy just has a really bad cold.” My son Finn is 4 years old. Suzy is 2. The only ailment they understand is the common cold.

“I think I’m getting better,” I assured them. But I wasn’t getting better. On the fourth day of non-stop coughing I got the diagnosis.

On July 29, 2015, gunshots were reported in the Kenyan wilderness. The next morning, five adult elephants were found slaughtered; their tusks removed. A baby elephant, just seven months old, was found by local wildlife advocates the following day, alone and scared, but alive. Baby Losoito was the only one left alive by poachers after they massacred his entire family.

The recent release of an independent, state-funded study on fracking shows that our long-standing concerns about the risks are justified. This latest revelation comes on the heels of months of scandal involving oil companies and the state agencies that are supposed to regulate them but, by their own admission, have failed to protect Californians' health and safety.

Californians have heard a lot about fracking over the past few years. Our concerns have only grown into outrage as more evidence of its risks to our communities, our water, our health and safety has come to light.

Below are remarks made about and by honoree Lisa Hoyos at CLCV's Environmental Leadership Awards in San Francisco on May 28, 2015.

Susan Frank, CLCV Board Member:

If you follow national environmental politics, you know the name Lisa Jackson. Since 2013, Jackson has served as Apple’s Vice President for Environmental Initiatives. Prior to that, she was Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, appointed by President Barack Obama. Her career and experience in government and in business demonstrate time and again that effective leadership on these issues can and does come from all sectors, and CLCV is honoring her at next Thursday’s Environmental Leadership Awards in San Francisco.

Lisa Hoyos is taking on climate deniers from the classroom to the statehouse, in all fifty states, as Director and Co-Founder of Climate Parents.
