Everyone Deserves Safe, Clean Water
Update: Victory! Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB 890.
Over 150,000 California residents lack safe water for drinking, bathing, and washing dishes. Even more have water service disconnected because they cannot afford to pay their water bill. Assembly Bill 890 (J. Pérez) will ensure that the local water mutuals for the City of Maywood address the extremely high level of manganese in the local water supply.
Why AB 890 is Needed:
Maywood, a city of more than 30,000, is served by three separate water mutuals that deliver water high in manganese. Manganese in high concentrations can disrupt the nervous system and create Parkinson-like symptoms. Water contaminated by manganese is also discolored and foul-smelling and -tasting.
AB 890 requires the water mutuals to conduct a study on the sources of manganese and to develop a plan to reduce the manganese to no more than the average level of manganese present in the potable water delivered in a 20-square mile radius of Maywood. AB 890 further requires the mutuals to identify funding sources to fund the work of removing the manganese.
Update:
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB 890.
